Fifth Annual Juneteenth a Resounding Success

Saturday, June 15, 2024 - Today marked Milford's 5th Annual Juneteenth Celebration, an event that All In for Milford  and many community members enthusiastically participated in on the Milford Green. We were fortunate to have beautiful weather, enhancing the wonderful community atmosphere we eagerly anticipate each year.

We were delighted to see familiar faces among our returning vendors, showcasing their artistry and talents alongside new participants. Our food offerings included Spice N Flava's beloved Jamaican dishes to Lalibela's flavorful Ethiopian meals, and Mecha Uma's classic American fare of hamburgers and hot dogs, as well as the delightful offerings of Suga and Spice Me with their assortment of tarts, muffins, teas, and spices. There truly was something to satisfy every palate.

The event's lineup of performers was equally impressive. Fernanda Franco set a poignant tone with her rendition of "Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing," followed by Mayor Giannattasio's proclamation of Juneteenth Day in Milford. We had a moment of silence for all those who did not escape slavery in the past as well as the present and included Michael Brown, a Milford resident who recently died.

Silent Quill, the talented silent word poet and rapper, captivated the audience with his poetry, followed by the uplifting melodies of the First Baptist Church Choir, who invited everyone to join in singing gospel songs. The Drum Society enlivened the atmosphere with rhythmic African beats, while Nehway charmed us with her soulful guitar and original songs.  Jolyn Walker held an African dance class guiding participants through the vibrant world of African dance. Denise Page's storytelling and Vee Montoute's gentle chair yoga session and sound bowl meditation rounded out the day's diverse and enriching program.

We extend our gratitude to the nonprofits from across Milford whose presence added an extra layer of community spirit, offering activities, games, and giveaways that made the event enjoyable for attendees of all ages.

This year's Juneteenth Celebration was a resounding success, providing a memorable experience and fostering a sense of unity and celebration within our community. We look forward to continuing this tradition in the years to come.
